Research in Geology

The research and development activities at Department of Geology Tartu University are focused both in fundamental and applied aspects of geology. Being a classical Paleozoic area the R&D has been centered on understanding the geological and biological evolution of this time period using unique well preserved geological successions of the Paleozoic Baltic Paleobasin, but also the Quaternary processes including glacier dynamics and the climate history.

Geology, mineralogy, geochemistry and geophysics based analytical and research expertise at the Department is tightly integrated with research in ecology, energetics and particularly in chemistry and physics, and through applied projects with enterprises/companies.

On 17 November at 10.15 Tõnn Paiste will defend his doctoral thesis “Early evolution of the genus Amorphognathus and updated Sandbian (Upper Ordovician) conodont biostratigraphy in Baltoscandia“ for obtaining the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (in Geology).
